“Games for seniors” is usually a euphemism for “games that are not very good”. It should not be. The two oldest and most serious lawn sports in this catalogue — bocce and croquet — are both played standing still, both reward a good eye over strength, and both are genuinely competitive at any age.
What actually rules a game in or out is three published numbers, none of which appears on a box.
The filter
The three numbers that decide it
1. How far you walk per round
Cornhole looks gentle and is not, in singles: the ACL court is 27 feet board-front to board-front, and a solo player walks it every round. Horseshoes is 40 feet between stakes. Bocce is about 60 feet in a backyard game but you play alternate ends, so the walk is one-way rather than a return trip. Molkky is a published 3 to 4 metres, which is the shortest walk of any throwing game we cover.
2. What you are throwing, and how heavy it is
This is where the spread is widest. A regulation horseshoe can weigh up to 2 pounds 10 ounces of drop-forged steel. A full-size 107 mm bocce ball publishes 2 pounds. A 90 mm bocce ball is noticeably smaller — Baden does not publish a weight for its 90 mm set, so we leave that blank rather than estimate it, but the diameter difference is real and it is why the 90 mm set exists. A croquet ball is 3 inches and 10 ounces and you never lift it in play at all.
3. Whether you have to get down to the ground
Nobody warns about this and it is the thing that ends afternoons. Retrieving eight bocce balls is eight bends. Resetting twelve Molkky pins is twelve. Croquet is the standout here because a 35-inch mallet does the work at ground level while you stay upright, and the ball is only handled between games.

Buy the right set, not the right game
Ball size is the purchase decision
Bocce is sold in three sizes and most buyers pick on price. For a mixed-ability group it should be picked on diameter.
107 mm is the competition size and the Baden set publishes 2 pounds a ball. It is a satisfying object and it is a lot to hold in one hand for an afternoon. 100 mm is the common middle ground. 90 mm is the size sold for mixed ages, and it is the one to buy if hand size, grip strength or wrist comfort are anywhere in the picture.

For croquet, the equivalent decision is mallet length: the GoSports six-player set publishes 35-inch deluxe or 28-inch standard mallets, and the longer one is the one that keeps a player upright.
