A small yard is not a problem to be worked around; it just moves the shortlist. Five of the games on this site fit comfortably in under 30 feet of clear run, and two of them — Molkky and ladder toss — have the best endgame scoring rules we cover. You are not settling.

What you do have to do is measure honestly. The most common small-yard mistake is buying cornhole because everybody has cornhole, discovering the court does not fit, and playing a shortened version that never feels right.

Note the surface column. In a small yard, hard standing is often most of the space you have — and the two giant games are the ones that specifically want a patio rather than tolerate one. A stacking tower on a lawn leans; on a patio it does not.

Not a compromise

Why Molkky and ladder toss punch above their size

Both of these have the scoring rule that keeps a game alive: you have to reach exactly the winning number. Molkky is exactly 50, and going over sends you back to 25. Ladder toss is exactly 21.

That matters more than it sounds. In cornhole a big lead is usually a win. In Molkky, a player on 47 has to knock over one specific pin from a scattered formation while the player on 30 swings freely. Small yards get the games with the best finishes, which is a genuinely odd outcome and a welcome one.

The third small-yard throwing game is the one nobody lists: washer toss. It is about 26 feet long but only about six wide, because the targets are boxes on the ground rather than frames standing up — so it slots into a narrow side yard that ladder toss and Molkky both want more width for. The catch is that no governing body publishes its dimensions.

Honest exclusions

What to stop considering

These do not fit a small yard, and shortening them does not produce a good version of the game:

Cornhole — 33 feet. See regulation vs tailgate size if you want the full argument.
Kan Jam — 60 feet between goals and deflection room. Not close.
Horseshoes — 40 feet between stakes plus platforms, and it needs a built pit.
Spikeball — 30 feet in every direction, not just one.
Croquet — the USCA lets you shrink it, but below about 40 feet the wickets stop being a challenge.

Can you play cornhole in a small yard?

Not properly. The court is 27 feet between board fronts plus a pitcher's box behind each board — about 33 feet total. Under 30 feet you are throwing from outside the intended box, which changes the game and usually means throwing from a flowerbed.
