Pine is lighter, cheaper, and dents where a dropped block lands on a block — those dents accumulate and eventually change how blocks slide. Hardwood stays square longer, costs more, and is heavier both to carry and to be hit by, which is exactly why its published age floor is 12 rather than 8.
