A yard die spends its life being thrown at the ground and tumbling across grass, gravel and patio. The corners take every impact, and the pips near the corners are the first thing to go.

Heat-stamped means the number is burned into the wood — it is a depression, not a coating, so abrasion cannot remove it. Printed or painted pips sit on the surface and wear through. When a maker publishes “heat-stamped, will never rub off”, that is not marketing; it is the difference between a two-season set and a ten-season one.

The corollary: if a listing does not say how the numbers were applied, assume printed.

Practical

Where they work, and where they do not
