If you host groups of eight or more and you are buying one lawn game, buy kubb. Nothing else we cover comes close on player count: the published range is 2 to 12, against 4 for cornhole, 4 for Kan Jam, 4 for Spikeball and 2 to 4 for bocce.

The mechanics help too. Batons are thrown underhand, the targets are blocks on the ground, and teams alternate — so a group of twelve is genuinely all involved rather than queueing. A round takes long enough to be interesting and short enough that nobody is stuck watching.

That last line is the rule that makes kubb interesting. The king is in the middle of the pitch the entire game, and knocking it over before you have cleared your opponent's kubbs loses immediately. Every wild throw carries that risk.

What separates the sets

Boundary markers — the sleeper feature

The 5-by-8-meter pitch is not optional in kubb; it defines where the baseline kubbs stand and how far a throw travels. Without markers you are pacing it out, getting it wrong, and playing a slightly different game every time. Yard Games includes markers; most sets do not. It is the single best reason to pick one set over another.

Hardwood, and knot-free

Kubb is wood hitting wood at speed. Softwood dents and mushrooms at the ends; knots are exactly where a baton splits. Every set worth buying says hardwood on the listing, and the better ones say knot-free.

Piece dimensions, published or not

A set that publishes its piece sizes is telling you it matches the championship specification. A set that does not may be a “backyard” size — smaller pieces on a shorter pitch, which plays differently. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you are buying, and one of the three sets below does not tell you.

Before you commit 430 square feet

Kubb needs about 26 feet of length and 16 of width — that is a real rectangle of open lawn, not a strip. It is more total area than a cornhole court, though less length. If your yard is long and narrow, kubb is the wrong shape and cornhole or Kan Jam fit better.

And if you want the crowd capacity without the footprint, Molkky takes any number of players in about 260 square feet — the trade is that turns are shorter and less involving.
