The site already covers the awkward numbers — the two-player problem, where most games are reduced rather than complete, and the three-player problem, where somebody is always the odd one out. Four is the opposite situation: it is the number nearly everything here is designed for, so the question is not what works but what is best.
Criteria
What to look for in a four-player game
- A published 2 v 2 format, not just a player count. “2 or 4” often means four people taking turns. The best four-player games make the partner matter on every point.
- A footprint you actually have. Four-player games range from 330 to 1,800 published square feet. This is where most of the decision lives.
- Continuous play. If two people stand still while two play, you have a two-player game with an audience.
- An endgame. Exactly 21, first to 21, a set — four people need the game to finish so the next four can start.
The picks
The four that are best at four
| Game | Published players | Footprint | What four does to it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kan Jam | 4 (2 v 2) | Goals 50 ft apart | Partner deflection — four is the format |
| Spikeball | 4 (2 v 2) | About 30 ft x 30 ft | Four is the only published number |
| Cornhole | 2 or 4 | 33 ft x 10 ft | Partners split across both boards |
| Volleyball | 6 a side officially | 60 ft x 30 ft boundary | Four covers more ground each |
Kan Jam is the purest of the four: the deflection rule means your partner is involved in your throw, which no other game here does. See Kan Jam sets.
Spikeball is the athletic choice, and roundnet publishes 4 as the only format — there is no singles version of the real game. See Spikeball sets.
Cornhole is the one that fits the most yards, and with four the partners stand at opposite boards, which keeps everyone at the same end of the afternoon. See cornhole sets.
Volleyball is the outlier: published for six a side, genuinely good with four, and the only one of the four that needs a lawn rather than a strip. See backyard volleyball.

Two goals and a disc, played at a published 50 ft, with a scoring system that only works because one player deflects for the other — the most genuinely cooperative game on this site.
Skip this if
Skip this if you have an odd number of players who all want to throw. Kan Jam is built around pairs and does not adapt to three.
What works
- 50 ft of length but almost no width — it fits a long narrow yard where cornhole does not
- The deflection rule means a weaker thrower still decides points
- Goals nest, so the whole game is one trip
What does not
- Needs exactly four to play the real game
- Published rules do not give goal dimensions or set weight
Published specifications

- About 60 ft x 20 ft (about 1,200 sq ft)
- Goal distance
- 50 ft apart

The original kit with three standard balls — same 3 ft net, same rules, lighter rim and legs, and the right set for a lawn rather than a bracket.
Skip this if
Skip this if you play on packed sand or concrete every week. The lighter rim and legs are the published difference and they are what gives out first.
What works
- Three balls, so a lost ball does not end the afternoon
- Identical net geometry to the Pro set — the game is the same game
- The cheapest way into a sport that scales from two people to eight
What does not
- Lighter rim and legs than the Pro kit
- Standard balls take less spin, which caps the ceiling

Regulation 4 x 2 ft boards on solid pine frames with a 1/2 in cabinet-grade plywood top, eight 16 oz all-weather bags and a case — the complete tournament-legal setup in one box.
Skip this if
Skip this if your yard is under 30 ft long. A regulation court is 27 ft board-front to board-front plus throwing room behind each board, and there is no shortening it without changing the game.
What works
- Regulation 4 x 2 ft, so the game you practice on is the game you would play in a league
- Plastic-pellet bags do not rot if they get rained on — the biggest failure point in cheap sets
- 38 lb for the whole set is genuinely two-trips-to-the-car territory, not four
- Retractable legs on steel bolts rather than a folding hinge that racks over a season
What does not
- Pine frame plus plywood top means the set does not want to live outdoors uncovered
- Varnished surface, not the painted-and-clear-coated finish tournament players prefer
Published specifications
- Court footprint
- 33 ft x 10 ft (about 330 sq ft)
- Board size
- 4 ft x 2 ft (ACA regulation)
- Playing surface
- 1/2 in varnished cabinet-grade plywood
- Frame
- Solid pine, mitered corners
- Leg hardware
- 3/8 in galvanized steel bolts with wing nuts
- Set weight
- 38 lb
- Bags
- 8 x 16 oz, recycled plastic pellet fill
- Players
- 2 or 4

The most completely specified net system on this site: a 32 by 3 foot regulation net on 2-inch extruded aluminum telescoping poles, a pre-measured 60 by 30 foot boundary, four 12-inch steel stakes and a published 21-pound set weight.
Skip this if
Skip this if your yard is under about 70 feet long. The boundary Park & Sun ships is 60 by 30 feet before you add run-off behind each end line, and shortening a volleyball court changes the game far more than shortening a bocce court does.
What works
- Publishes a set weight, which almost nothing else in this category does
- Three named net heights rather than vague adjustability, so a mixed game can be set up correctly
- The boundary comes pre-measured — the single thing that makes a backyard court feel real
- 2 in extruded aluminum poles are a genuine step up from the 1 in steel used in budget sets
What does not
- Nothing published about whether a ball and pump are in the box on this model
- 21 lb plus a 60 ft boundary is a commitment to set up, not a grab-and-go game
- No published warranty terms for a set at this price
Published specifications
- Net
- 32 ft L x 3 ft H, pre-attached sleeve net
- Net tapes
- 3 in net tapes

We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it.
