Q: Why do so few games take three players?

Because most are built as two symmetrical sides — cornhole 2 or 4, Kan Jam exactly 4, Spikeball 2 v 2. Three does not divide into two equal sides.

Q: Can three people play cornhole?

Not the published game. Two at one end and one at the other, rotating, works — but cancellation scoring assumes two sides, so three individual scores changes the game.

Two people is a common household. Four is a common gathering. Three is the number that turns up constantly in real life — a couple and a friend, a parent and two children, three housemates — and that almost nothing in this category is designed for.

The reason is structural. Most yard games are built as two sides, and three does not divide into two equal ones.

The principle

Turn-based games do not care

The games that handle three players are the ones where everybody throws from the same place in sequence and the score is individual. There is no team structure to break.

Molkky is the clearest case: published for 2 or more, individually or in teams, everyone throwing in turn at the same pins from the same line. Three players is exactly as natural as two, and the exactly-50 scoring — go over and you drop to 25 — keeps all three in contention rather than turning it into a two-horse race with a spectator.

Giant yard dice and a stacking tower both publish 2 or more with no stated limit, for the same reason: turns are short and individual.

Bocce is the interesting one. It publishes 2 to 4, and a set is eight balls — which divides three ways as two, three and three, or you play with six balls and two each. Nothing about the rules objects, and the closest-ball scoring works with any number of players.

Honest limits

The two that genuinely cannot be played

Kan Jam publishes exactly 4, and the scoring is the reason: 1 for a deflection, 2 for a direct hit, 3 into the goal — all of which assume a partner standing at the far goal redirecting your throw. Take one away and most of the scoring table stops applying. There is no three-player version.

Spikeball is 2 v 2 in its published rules. Three people can rally at a net, and that is practice rather than a game.

If your usual number is three and occasionally four, buy for three. The reverse leaves you with a game that needs a fourth person to exist — which is the same trap described in yard games for two players.

Making a two-sided game work with three

Three conventions that work, in order of how much we would reach for them:

Individual scores instead of sides. Ladder toss to exactly 21 works perfectly well with three separate scores. Cornhole does not, because cancellation scoring is built on two sides — you end up playing a different game.
King of the court. Winner stays on, loser swaps with the waiting player. Best for badminton and giant 4 in a row, where a round is short.
Two versus one, with a handicap. Works in kubb, where a published 2 to 12 range means the format is already flexible, and the single player throws the same six batons.
