These are the two purchases for a household with a lawn big enough to run on. Both are cheap, both pack away small, and they suit very different group sizes.

The decision
Which one your lawn and your group want
Eight or more people: flag football
It is the highest-capacity game on this site that needs no installation, which is why it justifies a whole field at a school event — see yard games for a school field day.
Two to six, mixed ages: soccer goals
Two goals under 3 lb, up in seconds, and three published sizes means the set grows with the child. It is also the one that gets used on an ordinary Tuesday rather than only at a party.
Both want more lawn than you think
Neither publishes a field size, because both are played on whatever you have. The honest floor is a clear run of at least 30 yards for flag football to feel like the game; soccer compresses far better. Footprints across the catalog are in how much space do yard games need.
Group size
How each one scales with the numbers
Field games live or die on turnout, and these two fail in opposite directions when the numbers are wrong.
Flag football needs its eight
Franklin publishes the set for 8 players as 4 on 4, and that is closer to a floor than a suggestion. The whole mechanic is pulling a flag off a moving person, so with four people total there is nobody to block and nobody to cover. It is the best game here at eight and a poor one at four.
Soccer works at any number above one
Two goals and a ball is a game with two players, six or ten, and the published 2.5, 4 and 6 foot goal sizes let you shrink the target as the numbers drop. That flexibility is why it gets used on ordinary afternoons rather than only at parties.
Above a dozen, both need a real field
At that point you are not playing a yard game, you are running an event — which is the subject of yard games for a school field day and yard games for large groups.
The other side
Where to buy the other one
The card at the top of this page covers one side of the comparison. This is our current pick for the other, ranked on published specifications rather than on play we have not done.
Best for young kids
GoSports Portable Pop-Up Soccer Goals, Set of 2
GoSports
Two pop-up goals in nylon fabric and netting that twist flat into a carry case, published at under 3 pounds for the pair, with plastic and metal stakes, six cones and reflective fabric — sold in 2.5, 4 and 6 foot sizes.
Skip this if
Skip this if anyone over about ten is shooting. A fabric pop-up goal is a target, not a frame — a hard shot moves it, and GoSports publishes nothing about how it holds up to one.

Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
