Backyard net heights

Four net games, four governing bodies, four different answers — and one rule they all share: the published height is for the sport, not for your garden.

Every net game on this site publishes a height, and every one of those heights was written for a marked court with officials. They are still the right starting point, because they tell you what the game is supposed to feel like. Here they all are in one place.

From the governing bodies

Published figures. Roundnet has no net height — the net lies on the ground.

Two things jump out of that table. Volleyball is the only game here whose recreational sets publish different numbers from the sport's own — 8 ft is a rounded 2.43 m. And pickleball is the only one that deliberately asks for two different heights on the same net.

The practical answer

What to set it to in an actual garden

Adults only, and someone is competitive

Use the published figure. It is the height the game was designed around, and a volleyball net at 2.43 m plays a different sport from one at 7 ft.

Mixed ages

Set it for the shortest player who is actually trying. This is the single highest impact change you can make to a garden net game and it costs nothing — see yard games for mixed ages.

Children under about ten

Drop it about a foot below the adult figure. A serve that clears the net is the difference between a game and a queue of disappointed children.

Footprints, rather than heights, are covered in how much space do yard games need. The nets themselves are compared in portable volleyball nets and portable pickleball nets.

Getting it right

How to measure a net, and what goes wrong

Every published height above is measured from the playing surface to the top of the net at a specific point, and the point is almost always the middle. The FIVB is explicit about it: net height is measured at the center of the court, the height over the two sidelines must be the same, and it may not exceed the official height by more than 2 cm.

That is the rule portable sets fail. A net tensioned at the posts sags in the middle under its own weight, so the center measurement is always the honest one.

If the net is too high

Serves hit the net and rallies never start. This is the single most common reason a children's net game gets abandoned within a week, and it is free to fix.

If the net is too low

The tallest player smashes every point and the game stops being a game. A badminton net at four feet turns an age-inclusive sport into a mismatch.

If the net sags unevenly

One side plays higher than the other and the players swapping ends notice before anyone works out why. Pickleball nets fight this with center straps and winches, which is why the tension system is a buying criterion rather than a detail.

What we would buy

The gear behind this guide

The sets whose published specifications this page is built on. Ranked on spec completeness and footprint clarity, not on testing we have not done.

Park & Sun Sports Spectrum Classic Portable Outdoor Volleyball Net System

Best overall

Park & Sun Sports Spectrum Classic Portable Outdoor Volleyball Net System

Park & Sun Sports

The most completely specified net system on this site: a 32 by 3 foot regulation net on 2-inch extruded aluminum telescoping poles, a pre-measured 60 by 30 foot boundary, four 12-inch steel stakes and a published 21-pound set weight.

Skip this if

Skip this if your yard is under about 70 feet long. The boundary Park & Sun ships is 60 by 30 feet before you add run-off behind each end line, and shortening a volleyball court changes the game far more than shortening a bocce court does.

Champion Sports Portable Pickleball Net, 22 ft x 36 in

Best overall

Champion Sports Portable Pickleball Net, 22 ft x 36 in

Champion Sports

The only portable net here that publishes both of the numbers USA Pickleball fixes — 22 feet wide and 36 inches tall — so it can be checked against the rulebook instead of trusted.

Skip this if

Skip this if you want to wheel it out rather than carry it. This is the carry-bag design, not the wheeled frame, which is a real difference on a 22-foot net.

Baden Champions Badminton Set

Best overall

Baden Champions Badminton Set

Baden

A complete portable net-and-racket set from the same Champions line as the bocce — the fastest way to put a net on a lawn without digging anything in.

Skip this if

Skip this if the lawn is windy. A shuttlecock is the lightest projectile in yard games and a 10 mph breeze ends the game.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What is the standard volleyball net height?
The FIVB fixes 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women, measured at the center of the court, and the height over the two sidelines must be the same and may not exceed the official height by more than 2 cm. Recreational sets publish rounded figures — Park & Sun lists 8 ft, 7 ft 8 in and 7 ft 4 in.
Why is a pickleball net lower in the middle?
Because the rules say so: 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 at the center. It is a deliberate two-inch dip, not sag, and it is why portable nets ship center straps and winches — so the dip stays two inches rather than becoming four.
How much should I lower a net for children?
Enough that a serve clears it. There is no published children's height for any of these games in a garden, so the honest instruction is to set it where rallies happen and move it up as they grow. A foot below the adult figure is where most families end up.

Why you can check our work

We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
