The short answer: 28 tiles is a full double-six set. Deal seven each for two players or five each for three or four, match a tile end to an open end of the line, and the first player with no tiles left scores the pips still in everyone else's hands. Play to 100 or 250.
Neither giant set we rank ships published rules, so what follows is the standard game written down, plus the one thing that genuinely changes outdoors: the line gets very long and you need to plan where it goes.
Before the first tile
Setting up
| Players | Tiles each | Tiles left in the boneyard |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 7 | 14 |
| 3 | 5 | 13 |
| 4 | 5 | 8 |
Turn every tile face down, shuffle them around on the ground, and take your hand without looking. The remaining tiles are the boneyard and they stay face down — they matter in the Draw game and are dead weight in the Block game.
Whoever holds the double-six goes first and plays it. If nobody does, the highest double starts; if nobody holds a double at all, the highest tile starts.
The simplest version
The Block game
- Play alternately, matching one end of your tile to an open end of the line. Doubles are placed crosswise, which is cosmetic in most house games and is how you keep track of them.
- If you cannot play, you pass. In the Block game you do not draw — this is the whole difference between the two games.
- The first player to play their last tile goes out and wins the hand.
- If nobody can play and tiles remain in hand, the game is blocked. The player with the lowest pip total in hand wins it.
The longer version
The Draw game
Identical, with one change: if you cannot play, you draw from the boneyard until you can, or until the boneyard is empty — and only then do you pass. It makes hands longer, makes blocked games rarer, and suits a crowd that wants the game to last.
For a garden with children in it, Draw is the better choice. A passed turn is the fastest way to lose a seven-year-old's interest, and drawing keeps everyone doing something.
Counting the pips
Scoring
Count the pips — the dots — not the tiles.
- Somebody goes out: they score the total pips left in all the other hands.
- The game blocks: the lowest hand wins and scores the difference between their own pip total and the total of all the others.
- Target: agree it before you start. A hundred is a short evening, 250 is a long one.
Color-coded pips make this far less painful at standing height, which is one of the few things the giant sets do publish — Triumph states color-coded pips, Hey! Play! states colored pips. If you are weighing up which scoring system keeps a game close across all our games, that comparison is in yard game scoring systems.
Buying
What the sets publish
| Triumph wood set | Hey! Play! set | |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces | 28 | 28 |
| Tile size | 3.5 x 7 x 0.5 in | Not published |
| Material | Wood, varnish finished | Wood |
| Pips | Color-coded | Colored |
| Carry | Oxford cloth storage bag | Mesh storage bag |
| Set weight | Not published | Not published |
| Players | Not published | Not published |
| Age floor | Not published | Not published |
Tile size is the figure to buy on and only one set states it. It decides whether the tiles stand on your grass and how much ground the line needs — and it is the reason the ranked page, giant dominoes, puts the set that publishes a dimension above the set that does not.

Skip this if
Skip this if you wanted a standing-domino-run game. At half an inch thick these are laying tiles, not topplers, and Triumph publishes no weight so you cannot judge whether a breeze will move them.
What works
- Publishes an exact tile dimension, which is rare in the giant-games category
- 28 tiles is the full double-six set, so the standard game works without house rules
- Varnish finish is published, which is the difference between a season outdoors and a summer
- A carry bag is in the box rather than sold separately
What does not
- No published set weight for 28 wooden tiles, which is the one number that decides whether you carry it anywhere
- Nothing published about player count, age or how much ground a game needs
- Half-inch tiles lay flat well but will not stand up for a domino run, which is what half the buyers want

A full double-six set of 28 wooden tiles with a mesh bag — the cheapest way to get the standard tile count outdoors, and the lighter of the two sets here to carry.
Skip this if
Skip this if the set lives outside. A mesh bag is a drying bag, not a weather bag, and these tiles are smaller and lighter than the Triumph set, so a breeze moves a standing line.
What works
- 28 tiles is the full double-six set, so every published dominoes game is playable with it
- Colored pips are readable at standing height, which is the whole point of a giant set
- Mesh bag drains rather than trapping damp against wood
What does not
- No published tile dimension, so you cannot work out how much ground a line needs
- No published weight or age floor
- Mesh offers no weather protection at all

Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
