Yard dice rules

A box of six wooden cubes is three different games, and the set almost never tells you which one you are meant to play. Here are all three, with the scoring written down so nobody rewrites it halfway through.

The short answer: six dice plays Yardzee and Yard Farkle; three dice plays Left Right Center. Farkle is the one most people mean — single 1s score 100, single 5s score 50, three of a kind scores the face value times 100 (with three 1s worth 1,000), 500 gets you on the board and 10,000 wins.

Write the scoring down before you start. Nothing governs yard dice, every family plays a slightly different version, and the arguments all happen in the second hour.

The push-your-luck game

Yard Farkle

Roll all six dice. Set aside any that score, then choose: roll the rest for more, or bank what you have and pass. Roll a set of dice with nothing scoring in it and you farkle — the whole turn's running total is gone.

The commonly used Farkle scoring. Published sources state there are no official rules; these are the most widely used values.

The scorecard game

Yardzee

Yahtzee outdoors with six dice instead of five, or five of the six if you want the original odds. Each player gets three rolls per turn, keeping dice between rolls, then must enter a score in one of the thirteen categories — and each category can only be used once, which is the whole game.

The practical difference outdoors is not the rules, it is the scorecard. A paper card on a windy lawn is a lost card, which is why the better giant sets include a reusable scoreboard or bag-mounted tracker. GoSports publishes a scoreboard with its standard giant dice set; the sets that do not include one leave you improvising.

The no-scorecard game

Left Right Center

Three dice, each player with three chips. The dice faces tell you to pass a chip left, pass a chip right, put one in the centre pot, or keep it. You only roll as many dice as you have chips, and the last player with any chips takes the pot.

It is the one of the three that genuinely suits a mixed crowd, because there is no scoring and no strategy — a six-year-old and a grandparent play it on exactly equal terms. The dedicated set is published with three dice and 24 coins; the long version is in giant Left Right Center.

“Rules included” is the row worth reading. Only the Left Right Center set publishes that it ships with rules, which is exactly why a page like this one is needed for the other two. The wood-against-foam decision — and it is a real one for hard surfaces and small children — is in wood vs foam yard dice, and the ranked sets are in giant yard dice.

Skip this if

Skip this if your lawn slopes. Giant dice roll further than you expect and a slope turns every throw into a search.

What works

  • Heat-stamped numbers instead of printed ones is the difference between two seasons and ten
  • The scoreboard turns a bag of dice into an actual game with rules
  • Also offered at 2.5 in if the yard is small

What does not

  • No published set weight
  • Pine soaks up dew if the dice are left out overnight

Three giant dice in foam or wood, 24 game coins, a carry bag and rules, published for 3 to 8 players — the pass-the-coins dice game scaled up for a table or a lawn.

Skip this if

Skip this if you need to know how big 'giant' is. GoSports publishes no die size for this set, only that the dice are oversized and come in foam or wood.

What works

  • A published 3 to 8 players — it holds a table
  • Foam or wood, so you can pick the noise level
  • Rules and coins included
  • No skill at all, which is the point at a party

What does not

  • No published die size
  • No published age floor
  • Pure chance — nobody gets better at it

Six red foam dice at a published 3.5 inches, with a double-sided dry-erase scoreboard for Rollzee and Farkle and a carrying case — the same size as the wooden set, without the noise.

Skip this if

Skip this for a windy lawn. Soft foam is light, and GoSports publishes no weight; a gust moves a foam die in a way it will not move pine.

What works

  • Quiet on a patio or indoors — no clatter
  • The same published 3.5 in size as the wooden set
  • Scoreboard for two games included
  • Nothing to hurt a small child or dent a table

What does not

  • Light, so wind moves it
  • No published weight or age floor
  • Foam dents and marks over time in a way wood does not

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What games do you play with yard dice?
Three, and a set of six giant dice covers all of them. Yardzee is Yahtzee played on grass, scored on a card with thirteen categories. Yard Farkle is a push-your-luck game where you bank points or lose them. Left Right Center uses three dice and a handful of chips and needs no scorecard at all. The only one with a single published rulebook behind it is Left Right Center, which ships with its own rules.
What is the scoring in yard Farkle?
Single 1s score 100 and single 5s score 50. Other numbers only score as three or more of a kind in a single roll — three 1s are 1,000 and three of any other number is that number times 100. Dice from separate rolls cannot be combined. You need 500 points in one turn to get on the board, and the game is usually played to 10,000. These are the commonly used values; published sources are explicit that Farkle has no official rules.
What does 'farkle' mean?
It is the turn-ending failure. If a roll produces no scoring dice at all, you farkle: everything you had accumulated that turn is lost and play passes on. That single rule is the whole tension of the game, because every extra roll risks the running total you have not banked yet.
How many dice do you need?
Six for Yardzee and Farkle, three for Left Right Center. A six-dice set therefore covers everything, which is why the standard giant set ships with six. GoSports publishes six 3.5 inch hand-sanded pine dice with heat-stamped numbers in its standard set, and three dice plus 24 coins in its dedicated Left Right Center set.

Why you can check our work

We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
