Every other occasion on this site is a party where games are part of the plan. This one is not. A weekend group at a rented house arrived to be in each other's company, and any game that requires somebody to stand up and organise it will lose to the conversation already happening.

So the selection criterion is unusual: what gets played without anyone deciding to play it.

No recruitment required

The three that pass

Cornhole

The canonical answer, for a specific reason: a round is short because only the difference between the two sides scores, so the boards free up constantly and nobody has committed to anything by picking up four bags. It is also the only game here that is genuinely playable one-handed.

A giant stacking tower

This one works by being looked at. A 19-row tower starting at 2.5 feet and reaching five in play is the thing in the yard people walk over to, and the rules need no explanation. It is a two-player game a crowd watches, which is exactly right when most of the crowd is talking. It needs about 10 by 10 feet of hard, level ground — on a lawn it leans before anyone touches it.

Molkky

Published for 2 or more, individually or in teams, thrown underarm from a line 3 to 4 metres out. People join and leave between throws without restarting anything, and the exactly-50 scoring keeps it close. It is also the smallest thing to bring — see travel weight of yard games.

Practical

If it is at a rented house

Most of these parties happen somewhere borrowed, which adds constraints the games themselves do not.

Nothing goes into the ground. Horseshoes requires two dug pits by NHPA specification and is not an option on a property you do not own. Croquet pushes nine wickets into someone else's lawn.
Assume nothing about the surface. If the tower is going to lean on the lawn, you want to know before you drive four hours with it. A patio or a driveway is what it wants.
Count the carry. Cornhole publishes 38 to 46 pounds a set. If one person is bringing everything, that is one heavy item at most.

The property-owner version of this problem — buying games to leave at a rental — is yard games for a vacation rental.
