Halloween is the one party of the year that is supposed to happen in the dark, and it is the one almost no yard game is built for. By the end of October the light is gone early, and the moment you cannot see a bocce pallino or a cornhole hole, the game is over.
The fix is not floodlights. It is games that carry their own light — and there are now enough of them to run a whole evening.
The shortlist
Three games that glow
| Game | What lights up | Published | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture the flag (REDUX) | Flags, team bracelets, jail and territory markers | 4 to 20+ players; 8+; batteries included | Children running in the dark |
| LED bocce | All 8 balls and the pallino | 100 mm; carry case and measuring rope | Adults, standing and talking |
| LED cornhole rings | The hole on any board | 36 LEDs per ring; fits 6 in holes; no drill | Anyone who already owns cornhole |
Capture the flag is the Halloween game. Running through a dark yard with a glowing flag is exactly the kind of thing children remember from Halloween, and the lit bracelets are what stop it becoming chaos. Full page: best capture the flag kit.
Bocce and cornhole are for the adults. Light-up bocce solves the one thing that stops bocce after sunset — finding the pallino. A ring kit turns boards you already own into a night game. See lighted bocce ball sets and cornhole accessories.
Practical
Setting up a dark yard
- Walk it in daylight. Sprinkler heads, dips, garden edges and low branches — mark or remove anything a running child could hit.
- Separate the running from the standing. Capture the flag at the far end of the yard; bocce and cornhole near the house, where the adults are.
- Costumes change the game. Long capes and masks with narrow eye holes are a trip hazard in a running game. Costumes off, or at least masks up, for capture the flag.
The full after-dark menu — including the games that do not work at night no matter what you light — is in playing yard games after dark.

Skip this if
Skip this if you only play in daylight. The whole kit is lights; at noon it is a set of plastic markers and two balls, and a pack of bandanas does the same job.
What works
- A published player range that scales to 20-plus, which almost nothing on this site does
- Lit bracelets separate teams in the dark — the real problem with night capture the flag
- Batteries included and replaceable
- Twelve published game variations extend it well beyond one game
What does not
- No published battery type or battery life on an all-electronic kit
- No published playing area — it needs a genuinely large, obstacle-free space
- In daylight it adds very little over improvised flags

Snap-on rings at a published 36 LEDs each, powered by three AA batteries per pack for a stated 24-plus hours, fitting any board with a 6-inch hole — no drilling and no wiring.
Skip this if
Skip this if your boards live outside. GoSports publishes no weather rating at all for these, and a battery pack clipped under a board hole is the part of a cornhole set most likely to sit in a puddle.
What works
- 36 LEDs a ring is the highest published count in the category by a clear margin
- No-drill mounting means it does not permanently modify a board you paid for
- Fits the ACL regulation 6 in hole, so it works on any properly made board
- Batteries are published as included, and 24+ hours is more than a season of evenings
What does not
- GoSports does not publish how many rings are in the kit, which is the first thing a buyer needs to know
- No weather rating on an outdoor electrical accessory
- AA batteries rather than rechargeable, so there is an ongoing cost nobody mentions

- 36 per ring
