Capture the flag is the best value in yard games, and this site has said so since launch: it needs two markers and a boundary, and it has no player ceiling. That is still true in daylight, and if you only play in daylight you should close this page and use two bandanas.
After dark the game changes. The flag disappears, the boundary disappears, and the teams become indistinguishable shapes running at each other. A glow kit fixes exactly those three problems — and nothing else, which is the honest way to judge whether you need one.
The problem
What a night kit actually solves
| Night-play problem | What REDUX publishes | Improvised alternative |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot see the flag | 2 glowing orbs | A lantern — but it is heavy and it breaks |
| You cannot tell teams apart | 8 glow bracelets | Headlamps, which blind everyone |
| You cannot see the boundary | 5 territory markers | Glow sticks, which roll and get lost |
| You cannot find the jail | 8 light-up jail markers | Nothing good |
| Players | 4 to 20+ depending on the variation | — |
| Age | 8+ | — |
| Batteries | Included and replaceable | — |
The bracelets are the product. Every other part has a clumsy improvised version. Telling friend from foe in the dark does not — headlamps light up the person you are chasing and ruin everyone's night vision, and without them the game collapses into confusion within a minute. Lit bracelets in team colors are the single thing that makes night capture the flag work.
Criteria
How we picked
- Verified in stock at the maker. Starlux Games showed the kit as in stock and ready to ship when we checked.
- A published player range. Capture the flag is bought for groups; a kit that tops out at eight players misses the point. REDUX publishes 4 to 20-plus.
- Team separation in the dark. The one thing a night kit must do. The published bracelets do it.
We have not played with it. Every figure here is the maker's own — how we pick.
Occasions
Where it earns its place
- Camping. The campground after dinner is where this kit lives. The whole group, no setup, and a game that runs until the batteries or the children give out — yard games for camping.
- Large groups. Youth groups, a family reunion, a sleepover party. It is the highest-capacity game on this site by a wide margin — games for large groups.
- Teenagers. The age the game peaks. Old enough to run in the dark safely, young enough to still want to — games for teens.
The wider after-dark options, including which games genuinely do not work at night no matter what you light, are in playing yard games after dark. And if the choice is between this and a structured team game for the same group, see capture the flag vs flag football.
Honest limits
Safety, because it is dark
Walk the ground in daylight first. Every yard has a hidden sprinkler head, a dip, a garden edge or a low branch, and at night those become injuries. Mark anything you cannot move, agree the boundary out loud, and keep the youngest players on the near side of it.
The site-wide picture on age floors and what is genuinely risky is in yard game safety and age floors.

Eight light-up jail markers, eight glow bracelets, five territory markers and two glowing orbs for flags, published for 4 to 20-plus players aged 8 and up — capture the flag turned into a night game.
Skip this if
Skip this if you only play in daylight. The whole kit is lights; at noon it is a set of plastic markers and two balls, and a pack of bandanas does the same job.
What works
- A published player range that scales to 20-plus, which almost nothing on this site does
- Lit bracelets separate teams in the dark — the real problem with night capture the flag
- Batteries included and replaceable
- Twelve published game variations extend it well beyond one game
What does not
- No published battery type or battery life on an all-electronic kit
- No published playing area — it needs a genuinely large, obstacle-free space
- In daylight it adds very little over improvised flags

Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
