Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November and the largest fixed-time gathering most households host all year. Everyone arrives inside the same hour, the age range runs from toddler to great-grandparent, and the person who would normally organize the games is committed to an oven for six hours.
That produces a day with a very particular shape, and it is not the shape any other page on this site describes. A family reunion is about the age range. A barbecue is about the afternoon drifting. Thanksgiving is about two halves separated by an enormous meal.
The shape
The day has two halves, and they want opposite things
| Before the meal | After the meal | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is playing | Anyone who wants out of the house | Whoever has not fallen asleep |
| Energy | High — people are cold and waiting | Very low |
| Time available | An hour or two | Short, and the light is going |
| What works | Running games on open ground | Turn-based games with no movement |
| What fails | Anything fiddly in gloves | Anything that needs a team |
| Where it happens | The biggest space you have | Near the door, or on a patio |
The mistake is treating it as one event and putting out one game. A flag football set is perfect at eleven in the morning and completely wrong at three in the afternoon, when the people still outside want something they can play holding a plate.
Criteria
What to look for
- It has to run without the host. This is the criterion that matters most and the one nobody applies. Whoever is cooking is not available to explain rules, referee or reset anything.
- Self-refereeing. If a game needs somebody to adjudicate, it will stop the first time there is a disagreement.
- No stakes in the ground. Late November ground is frozen, saturated or both. Anything held up by guylines is out — see yard games for cold weather.
- It absorbs a crowd without a queue. Twenty people and a two-player game is nineteen people standing in the cold.
- It survives gloves. Precision throwing is the first thing cold takes away.
The picks
What to put out
Flag football — the Turkey Bowl
The tradition, and the only game here that genuinely improves in cold weather. Franklin publishes eight belts with two flags each — four red and four yellow — a 34 inch belt length and a bright orange bean bag field marker, for 4 on 4. It is also the highest-capacity game on this site that needs no installation at all.
The honest con: Franklin publishes that no ball is included, which is the single most common Thanksgiving-morning discovery in this category. It also needs real open ground and genuinely does not work with four people. See flag football sets.
Cornhole — the game that runs all afternoon
A published 33 by 10 foot court, boards 27 feet apart, eight 16 oz bags, two or four players. People walk up to it with a drink, play a round and wander off, which is exactly the behavior a long afternoon needs.
The honest con: it is the game cold damages most. A 16 oz bag thrown in gloves goes where it likes, and the set we recommend weighs 38 lb, so it is not something you move once it is placed.
Kan Jam — for the people who want to move but not tackle
Goals 50 feet apart, four players as 2 v 2, finishing at exactly 21. A flying disc forgives thick fingers in a way a bag does not, and the goals rest on the ground rather than being staked into it.
The honest con: it is published for exactly four, so at a gathering of twenty it produces a queue unless you rotate deliberately.
Washer toss — the post-meal game
Two solid birch boxes that sit on the grass, eight plastic-coated steel washers, and scoring most people already know: three in the cup, one in the box, play to 21. It arrives fully assembled, takes about 20 feet, and asks almost nothing of anyone physically.
The honest con: nobody governs washer toss, so box sizes and throwing distances vary by region and by maker — two sets bought in different states may not play the same game. See washer toss.
Giant yard dice — the one that includes everybody
Six 3.5 inch hand-sanded pine dice with heat-stamped numbers, published for two or more players. Turn-based with no limit on the number of people, no teams to organize and nothing to explain, which makes it the game a grandparent and a six-year-old can both join after dinner.
The honest con: it is a dice game. The skill ceiling is zero, and the people who wanted to compete will be bored within twenty minutes.
Honest limits
What to leave in the shed
Three groups of games on this site are wrong for this specific day, and it is worth knowing which before you carry them out.
- Anything staked. Volleyball, badminton, soccer goals and tetherball all need ground that takes a stake. Late November ground does not.
- Rolling games. Bocce, croquet and lawn bowling all need grass that a ball will run on. Wet, cold, long November grass stops a rolled ball dead, which is a shame because they would otherwise suit the post-meal slot perfectly.
- Anything you have to teach. Kubb is the best game on this site and it is the wrong purchase for Thanksgiving, because the first game anyone plays is spent learning it and nobody has the attention span for that after eating.
The host problem
Running it when you are the one cooking
The practical answer is to set the games up before anyone arrives and then delegate them entirely.
- Place them the night before. Boards out, bags in a basket by the door, football pumped. A game that requires a trip to the shed mid-morning does not get played.
- Hand the Turkey Bowl to someone else. Name a person, not a role. It is a job that takes ten minutes of organizing and it should not be yours.
- Put the quiet game where people already stand. Near the back door, not at the end of the garden. After the meal, nobody walks anywhere.
- Accept the light. The afternoon is short at the end of November. Whatever is going to be played gets played before the light goes, which is another argument for two games rather than four.
For a gathering this size in general, the capacity question is covered in yard games for large groups, and the broader cold-weather logic is in yard games for cold weather.

Eight 34 in belts with two flags each in two colors, a bean-bag field marker and a carry bag — everything a 4 on 4 game needs except the ball, which is not included.
Skip this if
Skip this if you were expecting a ball. Franklin publishes belts, flags, a marker and a bag, and nothing else — and the whole belt detaches when a flag is pulled, which some groups find fiddly to reset.
What works
- Published for 8 players, which is double what almost every other game on this site takes
- Belt length is published at 34 in, so you can check it against the players before buying
- A field marker and a bag in the box rather than sold separately
- Nothing goes into the ground, so it plays on a park or a rented lawn
What does not
- No ball, and Franklin says so plainly
- The whole belt detaching rather than just the flag means a longer reset between plays
- No published field dimensions, so how much lawn you need is entirely up to you

Regulation 4 x 2 ft boards on solid pine frames with a 1/2 in cabinet-grade plywood top, eight 16 oz all-weather bags and a case — the complete tournament-legal setup in one box.
Skip this if
Skip this if your yard is under 30 ft long. A regulation court is 27 ft board-front to board-front plus throwing room behind each board, and there is no shortening it without changing the game.
What works
- Regulation 4 x 2 ft, so the game you practice on is the game you would play in a league
- Plastic-pellet bags do not rot if they get rained on — the biggest failure point in cheap sets
- 38 lb for the whole set is genuinely two-trips-to-the-car territory, not four
- Retractable legs on steel bolts rather than a folding hinge that racks over a season
What does not
- Pine frame plus plywood top means the set does not want to live outdoors uncovered
- Varnished surface, not the painted-and-clear-coated finish tournament players prefer
Published specifications
- Court footprint
- 33 ft x 10 ft (about 330 sq ft)

- 4 ft x 2 ft (ACA regulation)

Two goals and a disc, played at a published 50 ft, with a scoring system that only works because one player deflects for the other — the most genuinely cooperative game on this site.
Skip this if
Skip this if you have an odd number of players who all want to throw. Kan Jam is built around pairs and does not adapt to three.
What works
- 50 ft of length but almost no width — it fits a long narrow yard where cornhole does not
- The deflection rule means a weaker thrower still decides points
- Goals nest, so the whole game is one trip
What does not
- Needs exactly four to play the real game
- Published rules do not give goal dimensions or set weight

Two solid birch targets that arrive fully assembled and latch together into one object to carry, with eight plastic-coated steel washers and a construction-grade PVC cup in each target.
Skip this if
Skip this if you wanted the dimensions on paper. GoSports states the set meets regulation size guidelines but does not publish a box size, a cup diameter or a throwing distance, so you are trusting the claim rather than checking it.
What works
- Latching targets turn a two-piece game into one object to carry, which nothing else in this family does
- Solid birch rather than a composite, and GoSports publishes the material plainly
- Eight washers means four-player doubles works out of the box rather than needing a second set
- Arrives assembled, so there is no build step before the first throw
What does not
- GoSports claims regulation size but publishes no box dimension, cup diameter or throwing distance to check it against
- No published set weight, so you cannot plan the carry before it arrives
- Birch is untreated wood — this is a bring-it-indoors set, not one that lives on a lawn

Six 3.5 in hand-sanded pine dice with heat-stamped numbers that will not rub off, plus a dry-erase scoreboard and a canvas bag.
Skip this if
Skip this if your lawn slopes. Giant dice roll further than you expect and a slope turns every throw into a search.
What works
- Heat-stamped numbers instead of printed ones is the difference between two seasons and ten
- The scoreboard turns a bag of dice into an actual game with rules
- Also offered at 2.5 in if the yard is small
What does not
- No published set weight
- Pine soaks up dew if the dice are left out overnight
