The hot weather guide on this site argues that heat reorders the catalog — the two best games become the two worst choices on the hottest afternoon. Cold does the same thing in reverse, and for three separate reasons that each rule out a different group of games.
What actually fails
The three things cold changes
| What changes | What it breaks | What still works |
|---|---|---|
| Hands in gloves | Precision throwing — 16 oz cornhole bags, 650 g boules, horseshoes | Catching and running games |
| Frozen or waterlogged ground | Anything staked: volleyball, badminton, soccer goals, tetherball poles | Freestanding and ground-resting games |
| Darkness at five | Any game where you track something in the air | Lit targets and glow sets |
| Wet, heavy grass | Rolling games — bocce, lawn bowling, croquet | Throwing games with a hard target |
The picks
What to put out instead
Flag football — the one cold actually suits
Eight belts, 4 on 4, and everybody running. This is the one game on the site that is genuinely better at 40 degrees than at 85. See flag football sets.
Kan Jam — throwing that survives gloves
A flying disc is forgiving of thick fingers in a way a 16 oz bag is not, and the goals sit on the ground rather than being staked into it.
A light-up bocce set — for the 5 pm problem
Eight light-up 100 mm balls with a pallino and a measuring rope. Rolling games struggle on cold wet grass, so treat this as the option for a hard, dry surface after dark.
Ladder toss — the short, forgiving one
Fifteen published feet, bolas you throw rather than place, and a frame that stands on the ground unstaked.
Go deeper
The cold day most households actually host
For most American families the one gathering that happens in genuine cold is Thanksgiving, and it has a shape of its own: a running game before the meal and a turn-based one after it. That line-up is in yard games for Thanksgiving.

Eight 34 in belts with two flags each in two colors, a bean-bag field marker and a carry bag — everything a 4 on 4 game needs except the ball, which is not included.
Skip this if
Skip this if you were expecting a ball. Franklin publishes belts, flags, a marker and a bag, and nothing else — and the whole belt detaches when a flag is pulled, which some groups find fiddly to reset.
What works
- Published for 8 players, which is double what almost every other game on this site takes
- Belt length is published at 34 in, so you can check it against the players before buying
- A field marker and a bag in the box rather than sold separately
- Nothing goes into the ground, so it plays on a park or a rented lawn
What does not
- No ball, and Franklin says so plainly
- The whole belt detaching rather than just the flag means a longer reset between plays
- No published field dimensions, so how much lawn you need is entirely up to you

Two goals and a disc, played at a published 50 ft, with a scoring system that only works because one player deflects for the other — the most genuinely cooperative game on this site.
Skip this if
Skip this if you have an odd number of players who all want to throw. Kan Jam is built around pairs and does not adapt to three.
What works
- 50 ft of length but almost no width — it fits a long narrow yard where cornhole does not
- The deflection rule means a weaker thrower still decides points
- Goals nest, so the whole game is one trip
What does not
- Needs exactly four to play the real game
- Published rules do not give goal dimensions or set weight
Published specifications
- Footprint
- About 60 ft x 20 ft (about 1,200 sq ft)
- Goal distance
- 50 ft apart
- Players
- 4 (2 v 2)
- Scoring
- 1 deflection, 2 direct hit, 3 into the goal, instant win through the slot
- Winning score
- Exactly 21

Eight light-up 100 mm balls with a pallino and case — the only set here that solves the problem every summer bocce game eventually hits at 9pm.
Skip this if
Skip this if the set will live in a garage all winter. Lit balls have batteries, and batteries are the part that fails first.
What works
- Extends a party game past sunset without floodlighting the lawn
- Same 100 mm size as the standard GoSports set
What does not
- No published battery life or replacement spec
- Lit shells scuff faster than solid resin
Published specifications
- Court footprint

- 100 mm

A finished wood frame with real golf-ball bolas and a nylon case — the version that does not rattle apart the way tube-and-plastic ladder sets do.
Skip this if
Skip this if you need the set to stand up in wind. A wooden ladder frame has a big sail area and no ground stakes.
What works
- Golf-ball bolas have real mass, so they wrap a rung instead of bouncing off
- Wood frame stays rigid where PVC flexes and drops the top rung
- About 160 sq ft of lawn — one of the smallest footprints on the site
What does not
- No published weight or packed dimensions
- Wooden ladders blow over in a breeze
Published specifications
- Footprint
- About 20 ft x 8 ft (about 160 sq ft)
- Toss distance
- 15 ft
- Scoring
- 3 top rung, 2 middle, 1 bottom; first to exactly 21

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Can you play yard games in winter?
Which games do not work in the cold?
How do you deal with it getting dark at five?
Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
