Best bocce ball bag

Every bag on sale states the same thing: holds 8 balls. Not one publishes an internal dimension, and a regulation 107 mm set is nearly 20 percent wider than the 90 mm backyard balls these bags were probably measured against.

Verdict: buy the DSLEAF bag. The divider is detachable, which is the only published mechanism in this entire category for making a bag fit larger balls, and it has both a handle and a removable shoulder strap. Buy the padded case instead if the set travels in a car boot regularly — it is the only one publishing padding and mesh pockets, and the mesh pockets are the only stated home for the pallino. The FURIMETY bag with MOLLE webbing is for people who want to clip extras on, and the Cosmos tote is the cheapest thing here that does the job.

Bocce draws more search impressions on this site than any other game we cover, and it had no page about carrying a set. This is that page, and it is short on numbers because the category is.

What the makers publish

Holds 8 balls, and nothing else stated

We went looking for an internal dimension on all four of these bags, because that is the figure that decides whether your set goes in. We did not find one on any of them. Here is everything the four listings do publish.

The pallino nobody counts

Nine objects, eight slots

A bocce set is not eight balls. It is eight balls and a pallino — the small target ball that every measurement in the game is taken from. Lose the pallino and the game stops, which is why it appears on our replacing lost yard game parts page.

Every bag in this category is sold as holding eight balls. Three of the four publish no pocket, pouch or compartment for a ninth object. Only the padded case states mesh pockets, which is also the only published place to keep a measuring cord — and a measuring cord is not optional in bocce, because the closest-ball judgment is routinely too fine to call by eye.

The FURIMETY bag answers the same problem from the other direction with MOLLE webbing on the outside. It works, but the pouches you clip to it are a separate purchase, so budget for that if it is the reason you are buying.

The criteria, first

How we ranked these

We have not carried these bags, and with no published dimensions there is no specification ladder to rank on. So this is a ranking of published features against the two things that actually go wrong with a bocce bag — the balls not fitting, and the balls knocking together.

  1. Can the bag adapt to ball size? A removable or detachable divider is the only published mechanism for this, and two of the four have one.
  2. Is there a stated home for the pallino? One bag publishes mesh pockets; one publishes external webbing; two publish nothing.
  3. Can you carry it two ways? A set of eight resin balls is heavy enough that a handle alone becomes annoying over any distance.

Skip this if

Skip this if you need to know it fits before you buy. Like every bag in this category it publishes no internal measurement, so fits 8 balls is the only assurance you get.

What works

  • Detachable divider, so the bag adapts to different ball sizes
  • Both a handle and a detachable shoulder strap
  • States bag only, so there is no confusion about contents

What does not

  • No published internal dimension
  • No pallino pocket published
  • No padding stated

Skip this if the set never leaves the garden. Padding costs money and takes volume, and a hard-wearing tote does the same job for less when the only trip is to the lawn and back.

What works

  • Mesh pockets give the pallino and a measuring cord somewhere to go
  • Detachable shoulder strap

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Will a bocce bag fit 107 mm regulation balls?
Nobody publishes an answer. All four bags here state that they hold 8 balls and not one states an internal dimension, a ball diameter they were designed around, or a maximum ball size. That matters because the difference between a 90 mm backyard ball and a 107 mm regulation ball is substantial — roughly 19 percent more diameter and well over half again the volume. The bag with a detachable divider is the safest choice for a large set, because removing the divider is the only published way any of these bags makes more room.
Where does the pallino go?
In three of these four bags, nowhere specified. A bocce set is eight balls plus the pallino — the small target ball the whole game is measured against — and every bag in this category is sold as holding eight. Only the padded case publishes mesh pockets, which is the one stated place to put a pallino, a measuring cord and a scorecard. It is a small thing that is genuinely unaddressed across the category.
Do bocce bags come with the balls?
No, and two of the four say so explicitly in the listing title — 'Bag Only' and 'Balls NOT Included'. It is the most common mistake in this category, because the price of a bag is close enough to the price of a cheap complete set that buyers reasonably assume balls are in there. If you need balls as well, our bocce roundup covers complete sets.
Is a divider worth paying for in a bocce bag?
Yes, for two reasons. Eight resin balls loose in one compartment is several pounds of hard objects knocking into each other every time you pick the bag up, which marks the finish. More usefully, a divider that comes OUT is the only mechanism any of these bags publishes for accommodating larger balls — so the detachable divider is both the protection and the fit insurance.
What is MOLLE webbing doing on a bocce bag?
Solving the pallino problem, probably accidentally. MOLLE is the military-style webbing grid you clip pouches onto, and on a bocce bag it gives you somewhere to attach the small items the category otherwise ignores — the pallino, a measuring cord, a scorecard. The catch is that MOLLE pouches are a separate purchase, so if you never clip anything on, you have paid for stitching.

Why you can check our work

We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
