| # | Product | Best for | Score | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Idle Banter Boules Game Set, 8 x 73 mm The only boules set here that publishes its ball diameter — 73 mm, which sits inside the FIPJP legal range of 70.5 to 80 mm rather than leaving you to guess. | Best published ball size | 7.8/10 | $25.00 · View on Amazon Price as of October 19, 2026. #ad How we make money |
| 2 | WodGod Petanque Set, 8 Stainless Steel Boules Eight steel boules, a jack and a measuring string in one case — the full four-player game as the FIPJP rules describe it, including the string that settles the only argument petanque ever produces. | Best overall | 7.6/10 | $72.99 · View on Amazon Price as of October 19, 2026. #ad How we make money |
| 3 | WodGod Petanque Set, 6 Stainless Steel Boules The same set one size down: six boules covers singles and triples under the FIPJP format, and takes a third of the weight out of the case. | Best for two or three players | 7.3/10 | $49.99 · View on Amazon Price as of October 19, 2026. #ad How we make money |
| 4 | Hey! Play! Petanque Boules Set, 10-Piece The cheapest way into the boules game on this site, from the same maker as the 13-piece lawn bowling set we rate for kids. | Best budget entry | 6.7/10 |
Petanque is the game most households arrive at after bocce, usually because someone played it on holiday. The pitch is the same — get your ball nearest the little one — but three rules change everything: the balls are steel, you throw rather than roll, and you do it standing inside a circle with both feet planted.
That last rule is the sport. No run-up means no power from the body, so accuracy is everything, and it is why petanque is played competitively by people of every age and build.
FIPJP specifications
What the rulebook actually fixes
| Element | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Boule diameter | 70.5 mm minimum to 80 mm maximum |
| Boule weight | 650 g minimum to 800 g maximum |
| Jack diameter | 30 mm, tolerance 1 mm |
| Jack weight | 10 g to 18 g |
| Throwing circle, drawn | Not less than 35 cm, not more than 50 cm |
| Throwing circle, prefabricated | 50 cm internal diameter |
| Jack throw | 6 m minimum to 10 m maximum |
| Championship terrain | At least 15 m x 4 m |
Hold a recreational set against that table and the gap is obvious: almost none of them publish a diameter or a weight. That is not automatically disqualifying — a backyard game does not need competition-legal boules — but it does mean you cannot know what you are buying, which is the whole reason this site exists.
The picks
What we would buy
Idle Banter Boules, 8 x 73 mm — best published spec
The only set here that publishes a ball diameter, and at 73 mm it sits inside the FIPJP legal range rather than near it. Eight boules and a case is the full four-player game in one object. It still does not publish weight, so competition legality is half answered rather than answered.
WodGod 8-boule stainless set — best complete set
Eight steel boules, a jack, a case and — the part we like — a measuring string. Petanque ends in a measured centimeter more often than any other game on this site, and a set without a measure is a set that ends in arguments.
WodGod 6-boule set — for two or three players
The same set one size down. Six boules covers singles and triples; it cannot make the four-player doubles game, where each of four players throws two.
Hey! Play! 10-piece — the cheapest way in
From the same maker as the ten-pin set we rate for children in outdoor bowling sets. It publishes a piece count and a color and nothing else, which is the trade for the price.
Criteria
How we picked
- Published ball size. The FIPJP publishes a range; a set that names its diameter can be checked against it.
- Eight boules, not six. Eight is the four-player game.
- A measure in the box. Steel on gravel produces close calls constantly.
- A case. Eight steel balls loose in a shed is how sets get lost.
The terrain
Building a strip to play on
Petanque is the one game on this site where the ground is equipment. A terrain is not a lawn with the grass removed — it is a shallow, compacted, drained surface that lets a thrown boule bite instead of bouncing.
The FIPJP asks for at least 15 m by 4 m for championship play, but the number that governs a backyard is the throw: the jack travels 6 to 10 m, so a strip of about 12 m by 3 m plays the real game with room to stand behind the circle.
- Surface: compacted crushed stone or decomposed granite, topped with a thin layer of finer gravel. Loose deep gravel swallows boules; bare hardpack makes them skid.
- Edges: a timber or steel edge stops the surface migrating into the lawn and gives you a visible boundary without marking one.
- Drainage: a slight crown sheds water. A terrain that holds puddles turns to mud and stays unplayable for days.
- The circle: nothing permanent. A prefabricated 50 cm ring is the rulebook's own answer and it lifts out for mowing season.
If that sounds like more groundwork than you want, it is — and it is exactly why bocce is the better buy for a household that only has grass. The permanent-installation question in general is covered in setting up a permanent games area.
Go deeper
The rules, in the order they happen
Games go to 13, the jack is thrown 6 to 10 meters, and the team that is not closest keeps throwing — which is the rule almost every new group gets backwards. The full sequence is in how to play petanque.

The only boules set here that publishes its ball diameter — 73 mm, which sits inside the FIPJP legal range of 70.5 to 80 mm rather than leaving you to guess.
Skip this if
Skip this if weight matters more than diameter to you. A published diameter inside the legal range still tells you nothing about mass, and mass is what makes a boule hold its place.
What works
- Publishes the one number the rest of the category hides, and it lands inside the FIPJP range
- Eight boules and a case, so it is the full four-player game in one object
What does not
- No published weight, so it still cannot be checked against the 650 to 800 g rule
- 73 mm is at the small end of legal, which suits smaller hands and works against heavy shooting

Eight steel boules, a jack and a measuring string in one case — the full four-player game as the FIPJP rules describe it, including the string that settles the only argument petanque ever produces.
Skip this if
Skip this if you want a set you can verify against the rulebook before buying. WodGod publishes no boule diameter or weight, so you cannot check it against the FIPJP 70.5 to 80 mm and 650 to 800 g ranges.
What works
- Eight boules is the four-player game, not the two-player starter most sets ship
- A measuring string is included, and petanque ends in a measured centimetre more often than any game here
- Steel, which is the material the sport is actually played with
What does not
- No published boule diameter or weight, so competition legality cannot be checked
- No published set weight on a game made of eight steel balls — this is the heaviest thing per cubic inch on the site

The same set one size down: six boules covers singles and triples under the FIPJP format, and takes a third of the weight out of the case.
Skip this if
Skip this if four people will play. Six boules cannot make the doubles game, where each of four players throws two.
What works
- Lighter to carry than the eight-boule case, which matters for a set made of steel
- Same jack and measuring string as the larger set
