| 3 | STERLING Sports Premium Wooden Lawn Bowling Skittles Set, 11 in Pins Eleven-inch solid wooden pins, published — the size figure that separates a real skittles set from a toy, and the reason this one survives being knocked down all summer. | Best published pin size | 7.6/10 |
Ten-pin on grass is the most inclusive game in this catalog, and the reason is the scoring: a child who knocks over one pin has unambiguously done something. There is no handicap to negotiate and no rule to explain. What varies between sets is entirely physical — how tall the pins are, how heavy the whole thing is, and whether anyone publishes an age.

The picks
What we would buy
Toy Time 10-pin — best overall
The only set that publishes everything a parent needs in one place: 11-inch pins, a 7.75 lb total weight, a bag size and an age floor of three. It is the pick on the main outdoor bowling page and it stays the pick here.
Hey! Play! 13-piece — the indoor rainy-day option
Published for indoor or outdoor use and for ages three and up. It does not publish a pin height, which is the one gap, but a set that legitimately moves indoors is worth something in a wet spring.
STERLING 11 in — the set that survives the summer
Heavy solid wooden pins at a published 11 inches. Heavier pins stand better on imperfect grass and shrug off being knocked down all afternoon; the trade is that a small child cannot carry the bag.
In practice
Setting it up so children keep playing
The set matters less than the setup with this game. Three adjustments turn it from a novelty into the thing that gets played every weekend.
- Move the bowling line, not the pins. A four-year-old rolling from six feet and an adult from twenty are playing the same game at the same difficulty. This is the single change that makes it work across ages.
- Mark the pin positions. Ten pins reset dozens of times an afternoon, and without marks the triangle drifts until the game stops being the same game. Ten small pegs, or a chalk mark on a hard surface.
- Score by pins, not by frames. Ten-pin frame scoring is a mathematics lesson. Count the pins that fall and add them up — children keep track of that happily and the game keeps moving.
For the youngest players, the set also doubles as a target game: stand the pins in a line rather than a triangle and it becomes closer to skittles. The wider question of matching a game to a small child is in yard games for toddlers and preschoolers.

Ten painted New Zealand pine pins at a published 3 by 11 inches, two 2.75-inch balls, a 17 by 15 inch carrying bag and a published 7.75-pound set weight — the most completely specified outdoor bowling set we found.
Skip this if
Skip this if you have long grass. Ten-pin on a lawn needs the grass cut short and reasonably level, or the ball stops dead two feet short of the head pin and the game is over before it starts.
What works
- Publishes a pin dimension, a ball dimension, a bag dimension, a weight and an age floor — almost nothing in this price band does
- A published age floor of 3 makes it the youngest-friendly game on the whole site
- 7.75 lb is light enough to carry to a park with one hand
- New Zealand pine is named rather than 'wood', so you know what you are buying
What does not
- Nothing published about lane length or pin spacing, so the setup is entirely your call
- No scoring rules published with the set, and lawn bowling has no governing body to refer to
- Painted softwood on wet grass is a short-lived finish — this is a bring-it-indoors set

Ten wooden pins, two balls, a bag and a published age floor of three — the only set in this family that states the one number parents are actually looking for.
Skip this if
Skip this if adults want a game of their own out of it. Ten-pin on grass is a children's format; the adult version of this shape is bocce or lawn bowling proper.
What works
- Publishes an age floor, which almost nothing in this category does
- Plays indoors on a wet day, which no other outdoor set here can claim
- Bag included, so ten pins do not end up loose in a shed
What does not
- No published pin height, so you cannot tell how much game a child is getting
- No published lane length — the footprint is whatever you pace out

Eleven-inch solid wooden pins, published — the size figure that separates a real skittles set from a toy, and the reason this one survives being knocked down all summer.
Skip this if
Skip this if a small child is meant to carry the set. Ten heavy solid pins in a mesh bag is a two-handed job for an adult, let alone a six-year-old.
What works
- Publishes pin height, which is the spec that decides whether pins stand up on grass
- Solid wood rather than hollow plastic, stated on the listing
What does not
- No published age floor, unlike the lighter set we rate above it for children
- Heavy solid pins are the point and also the reason a child cannot set it up alone

Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
