Every other page in this section assumes company. This one does not. Some of the best reasons to own a yard game have nothing to do with a party: ten minutes of putting before dinner, a bucket of bags thrown at one board, a swing you are trying to fix.
Criteria
What makes a game work alone
- A target that gives feedback without a scorer. In or out, caught or bounced. If you need an opponent to tell you how you did, it is not a solo game.
- Fast reset. Solo practice lives or dies on how long you spend walking to collect things. Multiple projectiles help enormously.
- Regulation equipment. Practicing with the wrong weight builds the wrong habit. This matters more alone than it ever does at a party.
- Small footprint. Nobody sets up a 60 foot court to throw for ten minutes.
The picks
What to buy
Ring toss — the only published solo game here
GoSports publishes 1 to 4 players, and with five scoring towers at different values a single player has a target worth aiming at. It is also the smallest setup in the catalog. See ring toss sets.
A disc golf basket — the best solo purchase on the site
Putting is solo by nature, a PDGA-approved target catches at a course-accurate height, and ten putts takes two minutes. See disc golf basket dimensions.
Regulation cornhole bags — practice that transfers
A set of 6 by 6 inch, 16 oz ACL bags and one board is the whole practice rig. The bags are the part that matters; see best cornhole bags.
A hitting net — the one built for practicing
A 7 by 7 foot net with an adjustable strike zone and a published 90 second setup. It is the only product in this catalog designed from the start for one person. See backyard baseball.

One solid pine target carrying five scoring towers of different values, four rope rings and a carrying case — the smallest real throwing game on this site and the only one a three-year-old can play properly.
Skip this if
Skip this if you want a game adults will keep choosing. Five towers at close range is a genuine skill test for a child and a warm-up for an adult; nobody plays ring toss for two hours.
What works
- Five towers with different values turns a toy into a game with an actual risk-reward decision
- Solid pine is published as the material, not 'wood'
- Published for 1 to 4 players, and it is genuinely playable solo, which almost nothing else here is
- Case included, assembles in seconds, and the whole thing is one small object
What does not
- GoSports publishes no dimension at all — not the target, not the towers, not the rings
- No published throwing distance, so the footprint is whatever you decide it is
- No published age floor on a game whose main audience is small children

The newest portable Innova target and the one whose numbers you can look up: the PDGA approved it at Basic level in 2026 and publishes every dimension, down to a 17.0 cm tray depth.
Skip this if
Skip this if you want a target that plays like a course basket. At 17.0 cm deep it sits below the 18 cm minimum the PDGA sets for its Standard and Championship levels, which is exactly why it is a Basic target.
What works
- On the PDGA approved target list, so the badge on the box can be checked rather than trusted
- Every dimension is published by the PDGA, which almost no portable basket manages
- 24 chains in total is a real catching assembly, not a token one
- Carrying bag included, so it is genuinely portable rather than nominally portable
What does not
- Basic approval, not Standard or Championship — a 17.0 cm tray is below the 18 cm those levels require
- Innova does not publish a set weight, which is the figure that decides whether you carry it to a park
- Approved dimensions describe the target, not how fast it goes up

A 7 by 7 foot polyester net on a bow-type powder-coated steel frame, with an adjustable strike zone, metal stakes and a storage bag, published to set up in 90 seconds.
Skip this if
Skip this if nobody in the house plays organized baseball. A hitting net is a practice tool for a real ball; for a backyard game, the plastic set is the better buy.
What works
- A published 90-second setup
- Bow frame and metal stakes — built to stop a real hit
- The adjustable strike zone doubles it as a pitching target
- 7 x 7 ft is a forgiving target for a young hitter
What does not
- No published weight
- No published mesh specification
- A practice tool, not a game

- Bow-type, powder-coated steel
- Strike zone

Dual-fabric, dual-speed bags at the ACL's own 6 x 6 in and 16 oz spec, licensed and stamped by the league that wrote the number.
Skip this if
Skip this if nobody in your group can slide a bag yet. Dual-speed fabric rewards a technique you have to build first; a rec bag is more fun for a year.
What works
- Meets the published ACL dimensional and weight spec, not an approximation of it
- Resin fill, so a rained-on bag dries rather than rots
- Certified stamp means a league will not turn them away at the table
What does not
- Dual-speed fabric is wasted on players who throw the same shot every time
- Costs more than a whole budget board set

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Are there any yard games you can play by yourself?
What is the best way to practice cornhole alone?
Is a disc golf basket worth it for one person?
Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
