The short answer: if you bought a box of wooden pins and two balls, there are no published rules for it and you set the lane yourself. If you meant the sport, that is lawn bowls, and World Bowls publishes the lot. Both get sold under the words “outdoor bowling”, which is why the search results for it are a mess.
This page separates the two, gives you the published figures for the one that has them, and tells you what to agree out loud before the first roll on the one that does not.
Which one did you buy
The two games, side by side
| Lawn bowls | Yard skittles / ten-pin | |
|---|---|---|
| Governing body | World Bowls | None |
| What you roll | A biased bowl that curves | A plain ball, rolled straight |
| Target | A small white jack | Ten standing pins |
| Playing area | Green 31 m to 40 m in the direction of play; rinks about 5 m wide | Not published by any maker |
| Jack / pin distance | Jack at least 23 m from the mat | Not published |
| Scoring | Shots: each bowl closer than the opponent's best | Not published |
| Typical set price band | Club equipment | Entry-level yard game |
| What is sold on Amazon as a set | Rare | Almost all of it |
That last row is the whole problem. Search “outdoor bowling set” and you are shown skittles; search “lawn bowling rules” and you are shown a sport with a federation. Our best outdoor bowling set page covers the sets you can actually buy, which are the skittles kind.
The governed game
Lawn bowls, as World Bowls publishes it
Bowls is played on a flat green. The published green length in the direction of play is not less than 31 meters and not more than 40 meters, divided into rinks of about five meters across. That is a club facility, not a back garden, which is the honest reason this site sells skittles sets rather than bowls.
An end, in order
- A player places the mat and delivers the jack along the rink. Delivery is defined as releasing the jack or bowl with an underarm movement; if it slips out of the hand, the player picks it up and starts again.
- The jack must finish at least 23 meters from the mat line. It is then centred on the rink at the distance it came to rest.
- If the jack comes to rest less than two meters from the front ditch, it is moved out to a mark two meters from the ditch edge.
- Players alternate deliveries, each bowl curving in on its bias, until every bowl has been played.
- The end is scored: one shot for each bowl closer to the jack than the opponent's nearest. Then the next end is played back down the rink in the other direction.
The ungoverned game
Yard skittles, where nothing is published
Every set we looked at publishes the equipment and nothing else. The Toy Time set states ten pins at 3 by 11 inches, two balls at 2.75 inches, a 7.75 lb set weight and an age floor of three. It states nothing about lane length, pin spacing or scoring, and the listing says so. STERLING publishes an 11 inch pin height and leaves the rest blank in the same way.
So the rules are yours. These five decisions are the ones that cause arguments if you do not settle them before the first roll.
- Lane length. Long enough that the ball has slowed before it arrives, or pins fly rather than fall. On cut grass that is usually around twenty feet; on a long lawn it will be shorter, because grass is the brake.
- Pin spacing. A ten-pin triangle with roughly a hand's width between pins. Closer and a single ball clears the lot; wider and nothing chains.
- Rolls per turn. Two, as in ten-pin bowling, is the usual choice and the reason the sets ship with two balls.
- Scoring. One point per pin down is the simplest and keeps children in the game. Ten-pin's strike and spare bonuses work fine too; just pick one.
- Re-setting. Someone has to stand the pins back up. Agree whose job it is or it becomes the host's job all afternoon.
Before you buy
Where the ground decides it
Skittles is the game on this site most sensitive to grass height. A painted softwood pin falls over at a touch on short grass and refuses to fall at all in long grass, because the ball stops two feet short. If your lawn is shaggy or sloped, read leveling ground for yard games first, or pick a rolling game that tolerates it — the comparison in bocce vs lawn bowling is mostly about exactly this.

Ten painted New Zealand pine pins at a published 3 by 11 inches, two 2.75-inch balls, a 17 by 15 inch carrying bag and a published 7.75-pound set weight — the most completely specified outdoor bowling set we found.
Skip this if
Skip this if you have long grass. Ten-pin on a lawn needs the grass cut short and reasonably level, or the ball stops dead two feet short of the head pin and the game is over before it starts.
What works
- Publishes a pin dimension, a ball dimension, a bag dimension, a weight and an age floor — almost nothing in this price band does
- A published age floor of 3 makes it the youngest-friendly game on the whole site
- 7.75 lb is light enough to carry to a park with one hand
- New Zealand pine is named rather than 'wood', so you know what you are buying
What does not
- Nothing published about lane length or pin spacing, so the setup is entirely your call
- No scoring rules published with the set, and lawn bowling has no governing body to refer to
- Painted softwood on wet grass is a short-lived finish — this is a bring-it-indoors set

Eleven-inch solid wooden pins, published — the size figure that separates a real skittles set from a toy, and the reason this one survives being knocked down all summer.
Skip this if
Skip this if a small child is meant to carry the set. Ten heavy solid pins in a mesh bag is a two-handed job for an adult, let alone a six-year-old.
What works
- Publishes pin height, which is the spec that decides whether pins stand up on grass
- Solid wood rather than hollow plastic, stated on the listing
What does not
- No published age floor, unlike the lighter set we rate above it for children
- Heavy solid pins are the point and also the reason a child cannot set it up alone

Ten wooden pins, two balls, a bag and a published age floor of three — the only set in this family that states the one number parents are actually looking for.
Skip this if
Skip this if adults want a game of their own out of it. Ten-pin on grass is a children's format; the adult version of this shape is bocce or lawn bowling proper.
What works
- Publishes an age floor, which almost nothing in this category does
- Plays indoors on a wet day, which no other outdoor set here can claim
- Bag included, so ten pins do not end up loose in a shed
What does not
- No published pin height, so you cannot tell how much game a child is getting
- No published lane length — the footprint is whatever you pace out

Why you can check our work
We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
