Yard games for an adult birthday party

An adult party is not a children's party with taller guests. People arrive across two hours, hold a drink, talk more than they play, and will not be gathered into a round of anything.

Verdict: set up cornhole and one non-throwing game, and leave both standing all evening. Cornhole wins adult parties because it plays with a drink in one hand, breaks naturally for conversation, and teaches itself in one round. Add bocce or quoits as the second shape so two groups can play at once, and skip anything that needs you to gather people — you will not be able to.

The site already has a page for children's birthdays, and it is a genuinely different problem. This one is about a party that nobody is running.

Criteria first

The three tests an adult party game has to pass

  1. One-handed. Guests are holding a drink or a plate. A game needing both hands and a stance gets watched, not played. Cornhole, quoits, washer toss and bocce all pass; anything needing a bat, a racket or a net does not.
  2. Joinable without a lesson. Somebody arriving at nine should be able to understand the scoring from watching one round. Cornhole's three-in-the-hole, one-on-the-board is the clearest example in yard games; Molkky's exactly-50 rule is the best scoring system on this site but takes a minute to explain, which at a party is a minute too long.
  3. Pausable. Adult games stop constantly — someone arrives, food comes out, a round gets abandoned. A game with a short round and no sequence to lose survives that; a game with a long setup does not.
Published footprints and player counts. Footprint figures are the ones each game's governing body or maker publishes.

Layout, not equipment

Where to put them

Two placement decisions do more for an adult party than the choice of game. Put the games away from the food and the drinks but in sight of them, so a throw does not land in the cooler and people can see a game is available. And set the second game at a right angle to the first rather than beside it, so neither group is throwing across the other's lane.

Throughput is the part people get wrong, and it is arithmetic rather than taste: the table in how many yard games for a party works it out by guest count. The house-rules conversation that prevents most arguments is in yard game etiquette and house rules.

The neighboring page

Not a children's party

If the birthday is a child's, almost none of this applies: you will be running stations on a rotation, you need published age floors, and throughput matters more than conversation. That is a separate list in yard games for kids' birthday parties. For what adults actually enjoy regardless of the occasion, the crowd segment is yard games for adults.

Regulation 4 x 2 ft boards on solid pine frames with a 1/2 in cabinet-grade plywood top, eight 16 oz all-weather bags and a case — the complete tournament-legal setup in one box.

Skip this if

Skip this if your yard is under 30 ft long. A regulation court is 27 ft board-front to board-front plus throwing room behind each board, and there is no shortening it without changing the game.

What works

  • Regulation 4 x 2 ft, so the game you practice on is the game you would play in a league
  • Plastic-pellet bags do not rot if they get rained on — the biggest failure point in cheap sets
  • 38 lb for the whole set is genuinely two-trips-to-the-car territory, not four
  • Retractable legs on steel bolts rather than a folding hinge that racks over a season

What does not

  • Pine frame plus plywood top means the set does not want to live outdoors uncovered
  • Varnished surface, not the painted-and-clear-coated finish tournament players prefer

Skip this if

Skip this if you wanted metal quoits. These are rope rings on wooden targets — the lawn version of the game — and they suit a patio or a picnic, not a pitch dug into the ground.

What works

  • A published tournament distance and a published scoring rule
  • Rope rings — safe indoors, on a deck, around children
  • Targets stack with the rings stored on the pins
  • Solid wood targets, published

What does not

  • No published target dimensions
  • No carry bag published
  • Rope rings are the lawn game, not the traditional metal one

Two solid birch targets that arrive fully assembled and latch together into one object to carry, with eight plastic-coated steel washers and a construction-grade PVC cup in each target.

Skip this if

Skip this if you wanted the dimensions on paper. GoSports states the set meets regulation size guidelines but does not publish a box size, a cup diameter or a throwing distance, so you are trusting the claim rather than checking it.

What works

  • Latching targets turn a two-piece game into one object to carry, which nothing else in this family does
  • Solid birch rather than a composite, and GoSports publishes the material plainly
  • Eight washers means four-player doubles works out of the box rather than needing a second set
  • Arrives assembled, so there is no build step before the first throw

What does not

  • GoSports claims regulation size but publishes no box dimension, cup diameter or throwing distance to check it against
  • No published set weight, so you cannot plan the carry before it arrives
  • Birch is untreated wood — this is a bring-it-indoors set, not one that lives on a lawn

107 mm thermo-set composition resin balls built to international bocce specifications and named an official ball of the United States Bocce Federation.

Skip this if

Skip this if the set is mainly for kids or a beach bag. Full-size 107 mm balls are heavy enough that a small player cannot roll one accurately.

What works

  • Official ball of the United States Bocce Federation — the strongest sourcing claim of any set here
  • Striped for 2, 3 or 4 players, which is the format most backyard games actually use
  • Thermo-set resin holds its shape on gravel where softer resins scar

What does not

  • Full 107 mm weight is a lot of ball for a mixed-age game
  • No published set weight for the carry

Two goals and a disc, played at a published 50 ft, with a scoring system that only works because one player deflects for the other — the most genuinely cooperative game on this site.

Skip this if

Skip this if you have an odd number of players who all want to throw. Kan Jam is built around pairs and does not adapt to three.

What works

  • 50 ft of length but almost no width — it fits a long narrow yard where cornhole does not
  • The deflection rule means a weaker thrower still decides points
  • Goals nest, so the whole game is one trip

What does not

  • Needs exactly four to play the real game
  • Published rules do not give goal dimensions or set weight

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What yard games work best at an adult birthday party?
Games you can play one-handed, pause mid-round, and join without being taught. Cornhole is the answer at almost every adult party for exactly those three reasons: one bag at a time, a natural gap between throws for conversation, and scoring anyone picks up by watching a single round. Quoits, washer toss and Kan Jam all work on the same principle.
How many games should you set up for an adult party?
Two for up to about twenty guests, three beyond that — and they should be different shapes, not three throwing games. The reasoning is throughput: a cornhole match occupies four people, so one game at a party of thirty leaves twenty-six standing. The full arithmetic, including run lengths, is in how many yard games for a party.
What is the difference between games for an adult party and a kids' party?
Pace and gathering. A children's party runs on an adult rotating everyone through stations in a fixed order; an adult party cannot be organized at all, because guests arrive across two hours and refuse to be assembled. So adult games must be self-serve: permanently set up, obviously joinable, and playable in a two-minute round rather than a scheduled heat.
Do adult party games need to work in the dark?
Usually yes for the second half, because an evening party outlasts the daylight. That is a lighting decision rather than a game decision: light the playing area rather than buying glowing equipment, because a lit target that everyone can see beats a glowing bag that only the thrower can follow. See playing yard games after dark.

Why you can check our work

We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
