The end-of-summer party is about what survives the dark. The season opener is the opposite problem: everything you own has been in a shed since September, the lawn has not been properly mown yet, and the first anyone learns about either is when twenty people are standing on it.
Before the guests
The ten minutes that save the afternoon
- Lay the wooden sets flat and look down them. A cornhole top that has bowed over winter is visible from the end. Boards stored flat under other things are the usual culprit.
- Smell the bags. A cornhole bag put away damp grows mould in a sealed box. Mouldy bags do not recover and should be replaced.
- Count the small parts. Jacks, pallinos and bolas are what go missing over a winter — see replacing lost yard game parts.
- Mow short, three days ahead. Long spring grass stops every rolling game on this site.
The line-up
What to put out
The anchor: cornhole
A 33 by 10 foot corridor, two or four players, and it runs all afternoon without supervision. It is the game people walk up to with a drink in one hand.
The one that scales: bocce
Works on grass that is not yet in good condition, plays across every age at the gathering, and needs no setup beyond throwing the pallino.
The one for the people who want to move
Roundnet or Kan Jam. Both absorb the guests who have been indoors since October and want to run at something.
The filler
Ladder toss, for the queue. About 20 by 8 feet, no assembly, and an exactly-21 endgame.

Regulation 4 x 2 ft boards on solid pine frames with a 1/2 in cabinet-grade plywood top, eight 16 oz all-weather bags and a case — the complete tournament-legal setup in one box.
Skip this if
Skip this if your yard is under 30 ft long. A regulation court is 27 ft board-front to board-front plus throwing room behind each board, and there is no shortening it without changing the game.
What works
- Regulation 4 x 2 ft, so the game you practice on is the game you would play in a league
- Plastic-pellet bags do not rot if they get rained on — the biggest failure point in cheap sets
- 38 lb for the whole set is genuinely two-trips-to-the-car territory, not four
- Retractable legs on steel bolts rather than a folding hinge that racks over a season
What does not
- Pine frame plus plywood top means the set does not want to live outdoors uncovered
- Varnished surface, not the painted-and-clear-coated finish tournament players prefer
Published specifications
- Court footprint
- 33 ft x 10 ft (about 330 sq ft)
- Board size
- 4 ft x 2 ft (ACA regulation)

107 mm thermo-set composition resin balls built to international bocce specifications and named an official ball of the United States Bocce Federation.
Skip this if
Skip this if the set is mainly for kids or a beach bag. Full-size 107 mm balls are heavy enough that a small player cannot roll one accurately.
What works
- Official ball of the United States Bocce Federation — the strongest sourcing claim of any set here
- Striped for 2, 3 or 4 players, which is the format most backyard games actually use
- Thermo-set resin holds its shape on gravel where softer resins scar
What does not
- Full 107 mm weight is a lot of ball for a mixed-age game
- No published set weight for the carry
Published specifications
- Court footprint
- 86.92 ft x 13.12 ft (about 1,140 sq ft)

The original kit with three standard balls — same 3 ft net, same rules, lighter rim and legs, and the right set for a lawn rather than a bracket.
Skip this if
Skip this if you play on packed sand or concrete every week. The lighter rim and legs are the published difference and they are what gives out first.
What works
- Three balls, so a lost ball does not end the afternoon
- Identical net geometry to the Pro set — the game is the same game
- The cheapest way into a sport that scales from two people to eight
What does not
- Lighter rim and legs than the Pro kit
- Standard balls take less spin, which caps the ceiling
Published specifications
- Footprint
- About 30 ft x 30 ft (about 900 sq ft)

A finished wood frame with real golf-ball bolas and a nylon case — the version that does not rattle apart the way tube-and-plastic ladder sets do.
Skip this if
Skip this if you need the set to stand up in wind. A wooden ladder frame has a big sail area and no ground stakes.
What works
- Golf-ball bolas have real mass, so they wrap a rung instead of bouncing off
- Wood frame stays rigid where PVC flexes and drops the top rung
- About 160 sq ft of lawn — one of the smallest footprints on the site
What does not
- No published weight or packed dimensions
- Wooden ladders blow over in a breeze
Published specifications
- Footprint
- About 20 ft x 8 ft (about 160 sq ft)
- Toss distance
- 15 ft
- Scoring
- 3 top rung, 2 middle, 1 bottom; first to exactly 21

- 6, real golf balls

Two goals and a disc, played at a published 50 ft, with a scoring system that only works because one player deflects for the other — the most genuinely cooperative game on this site.
Skip this if
Skip this if you have an odd number of players who all want to throw. Kan Jam is built around pairs and does not adapt to three.
What works
- 50 ft of length but almost no width — it fits a long narrow yard where cornhole does not
- The deflection rule means a weaker thrower still decides points
- Goals nest, so the whole game is one trip
What does not
- Needs exactly four to play the real game
- Published rules do not give goal dimensions or set weight
Published specifications
- Footprint
- About 60 ft x 20 ft (about 1,200 sq ft)
- Goal distance
- 50 ft apart
