Badminton sets for kids

A shuttlecock decelerates hard, which is what makes badminton the most age-inclusive net game there is — as long as the net is not set at the height adults play it.

Badminton is the gentlest net game on this site. A shuttlecock decelerates hard, which gives a slower or shorter player time to get there — the same physics that makes it the best net game for children and the worst one for a windy yard.

Three sets, and not one publishes a net height. That is the single most useful figure for a parent, because the whole question is whether a child can hit a shuttle over it. We have left every one of those cells blank rather than guessing.

The picks

What we would buy

Franklin Sports 4-player — best overall for children

Four rackets in the box is the specification that matters, because it means doubles, and doubles is the format children sustain. One racket each and nobody waits.

EastPoint Easy Setup — the one that publishes its footprint

Fifteen feet of published net width is the only footprint figure in this group, so it is the only set you can measure the lawn for before ordering. Add shuttlecocks with it.

Baden Champions — the step up

The set we rate on the main badminton page, and the one to buy if adults will use it too rather than supervising it.

The consumables

What to buy alongside the set

Badminton is the only game in this family with a genuine consumable, and it is the reason a new set stops getting used far more often than the net is.

More shuttlecocks than you think

Plastic shuttles survive children better than feathered ones and are what recreational sets ship. They still split at the skirt, and two of them will not last a summer.

Something to weigh the posts

Light family sets rely on thin ground pegs. On dry summer lawn those pull out at the first hard serve. Sandbags or a couple of bricks at the post bases fix the most annoying failure in the whole category.

A realistic view of the wind

No accessory fixes this one. A shuttlecock is the lightest projectile in any game on this site, and on an exposed lawn it simply will not go where it is hit. If your yard is exposed, read coastal and windy yards before buying — the honest answer there may be a different game entirely.

Skip this if

Skip this if anyone taller than about five feet is serious about the game. A recreational set is built around a net that does not reach the 1.55 m the BWF fixes at the posts.

What works

  • Four rackets means doubles, which is the format children actually sustain
  • From a maker with real published specifications on its other sets

What does not

  • Publishes no net height, so it cannot be checked against the BWF figures
  • No published age floor on a set sold for families

Skip this if

Skip this if the lawn is exposed. A 15 ft net catches wind like a sail, and a shuttlecock is the lightest projectile in any game on this site.

What works

  • Publishes the net width, which is the footprint number most badminton sets leave out
  • Four rackets and two shuttles, so nothing else is needed on day one

What does not

  • Two shuttlecocks is thin — they are the consumable in this game
  • No published net height or age floor

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What height should a badminton net be for children?
Lower than the published one. The BWF fixes 1.55 m at the posts and 1.524 m at the center for the adult game; for children under about ten, dropping it by a foot turns a game of missed serves into actual rallies. No children's set publishes its own height, so this is something you set yourself.
How much space does backyard badminton need?
A full BWF doubles court is 44 by 20 feet, about 880 square feet. Casual family rallying works in roughly 30 by 15 feet, because a shuttlecock simply does not travel like a ball.
How many shuttlecocks should a set include?
More than two. Shuttlecocks are the consumable in this game — they split, they get stepped on, and they end up on roofs. A set that ships two is a set you will be reordering for within a fortnight.

Why you can check our work

We have not played these. Every figure above is copied from a manufacturer's published listing or a governing body's published rules, and named so you can verify it. Where a maker publishes nothing, the field is blank rather than filled in. How we pick explains the whole method, including what would change a recommendation.
